On December 28, 1988
Earning a postseason berth for the third consecutive year, Indiana defeated South Carolina in the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tenn., 34-10. Although Indiana dominated throughout, the game-breaking play occurred on the first snap of the fourth quarter, when Indiana quarterback Dave Schnell hooked up with wide receiver Rob Turner on an 88-yard touchdown pass that gave the Hoosiers a 27-10 lead. With 575 yards of total offense, Indiana set a Liberty Bowl record. Schnell (378 yards., 2 TDs) was the game's Most Valuable Player.
